March of Kindness

My oldest...Dionna...has decided to have a "March of Kindness"  She has challenged each of us to perform a "random act of kindness"...big or small...anonymous or not...each day for the month of March and report it on our blog...I HOPE I can manage to do that....so I am challenging myself....

If you would like to read her blog...and see what she has come up with as suggestions ....check out her blog at  Code Name Mama

I will begin tomorrow.....and edit each day here ...to add what I have done for someone else.

Tuesday...March1st.... I didn't wait until much after midnight to do my first act of Kindness.... I was having a HORRIBLE time falling asleep last night and was tossing and turning...I didn't want to keep Pat awake so I moved to the spare bedroom so that he could sleep undisturbed. I will not let the rest of my day go by without inserting some more kindness into my day...I promise!!!

Wednesday...March 2nd... One our customers at the pharmacy is  very worried...because of several diseases that she is dealing with, the doctors are telling her that she is probably going to have both legs amputated. I was able to take a few minutes to talk with her and try to give her some support and encouragement. I assured her that I will be praying for her...which I will!!

Thursday....March 3rd... I sent a get well card to a friend from church who is home sick from work

Friday...March 4th....I mailed St. Patricks Day Cards to some very special people in my life.

Saturday... March 5th....I called a friend who is in the hospital and visited with him by phone

Sunday...March6th.... Helped Dionna pay for a new set of pots and pans, to replace the ones she lots in the smoke incident

Monday...March 7th.... An act of kindness to myself...we went and picked Shawna and Rhonin up from the airport. ( Okay okay...it's a reach!!! lol)

Tuesday... March 8th... Sent an ecard to a friend that I hadn't talked to in a long time

Wednesday...March 9th... Went into work and worked for 5 hours on during my time off for Shawna's visit...because they were short handed.

Thursday...March10th.... I watched Kieran and Rhonin ( I know I know...BIG Sacrifice) so that Dionna and Shawna could go over to Dionnas' home and get  it ready for the rug cleaning company to come and clean the rugs after the "great smoke episode).

Friday....March11th...Helped with Rhonin while Shawna sat in line for THREE HOURS, waiting to buy a new I pad at Best Buy.

As an aside...I am really having trouble coming up with these RAOK...they just seem to me to be the "right thing to do"...or my usual everday activities...they don't seem like particular "acts of kindness"...am I just not understanding what these RAOK are supposed to be....or am I just doing them all the time anyway??? Hmmmmmm

Saturday...March12th....We drove to Sedalia, Mo to meet Pat's folks for lunch and visit with them while Shawna and Rhonin are in town. They don't get to see their great grandsons very often...so we were happy to get them all together!!!

Sunday....March13th....My RAOK sort of backfired today...the youngest daughter of my best friend at church is going through a very contentious divorce....they have what is (hopefully) their final arbitration tomorrow and I went up to her after church to tell her that I was praying for her...and that I loved her. I made her CRY!!! and I made her Mom CRY!!! shoot...I even cried...lol.

Monday...March14th... My RAOK was sort of selfish today...I met Dionna, Kieran, Shawna and Rhonin for lunch today...the unselfish part was that it was at the T-Rex Restaurant at the Legends shopping center...THAT was strictly for Kieran...but I sure got the major benefit from it...time with two of my girls and 2 precious grandbabies!!

Tuesday...March 15th...I went to Sonic for poor Shawna who was SO terribly thirsty and needed a Dr. Pepper desperately!!!

Wednesday...March16th... Todays RAOK was EASY....we went to KC to see Dionna and Kieran, before getting Shawna and Rhonin to the airport for their flight home. We all decided to take the boys to a local park since it was such a beautiful day. The park was LOADED with children...lots of folks must have decided that it was perfect weather for an outing. There was a sweet little girl there, about 3 or 4 years old and I am not sure WHO she was being watched by because no one seemed to be paying her any attention at all. The two of us interacted for a few moments ( I was actually protecting Rhonin from her very energetic use of a stick..lol) and she started asking me to help her get up on some of the apparatus that was a little big for her to navigate on her own. I spent about 10 minutes...helping her up and down ladders, and gave her a little personal attention that she seemed to be wanting so badly. (Never did see what adult she was with...it was a little sad...and a little scary!!)

Thursday...March17th...My RAOK was for my husband tonight...he LOVES St. Patricks Day..he would be like his parents and paint himself GREEN if he thought I would let him get away with it...lol. He wanted to go to The American Legion that we are members of for their Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner....I do NOT like going to The American Legion..I HATE Corned Beef and Cabbage but I went along...kept a smile on my face and to add to the RAOK...one of the couples there that I really don't enjoy at all invited us to sit with them...I was a PERFECT lady...and spent the evening with them!!! (Whew that should count as a couple of extra days of RAOK credit...heheheh)

Friday...March18th.... I sent a card to a friend from church who has had Cancer Surgery in a hospital up in Omaha, Neb.

Saturday...March19th...I made a double batch of brownies and took them to the local firestation tonight ...to tell the firefighters thank you for what they do for us every single day.

Sunday...March20th...I called Mom and Dad to see how they are doing since Daddy got out of the hospital.

Monday....March 21st.... Todays' RAOK was to myself...I started exercising on my stationary bike again...I will do it each morning or evening...as my schedule permits. I will add an increment of time each day and hopefully start getting back into some semblance of shape again.

Tuesday...March22nd.... Are you all about ready for this month long nonsense to be over??? lol  My RAOK today was directed towards one of my co-workers...she was feeling so poorly today...and so I went out of my way to be kind and compliment her...trying to lift her spirits a little bit. I hope it helped!!!

Wednesday...March 23rd...My RAOK today was a little selfish...but it benefitted 4 other people so I will let it count...I cancelled Praise Team practice...one of our team members is not feeling well and really had no business being out and trying to sing...and the FIL of our pianist passed away that day...she was going to make the drive back into town to be there for practice and I just knew she didn't need one more thing on her plate.

Thursday...March 24th... I guess today is why I sometimes feel like this RAOK month is a little boring as far as the things I report....most of my RAOKs are just things that I do all day long everyday anyway...nothing special or unique. Today I had several opportunities to just be a listening ear for customers who have become more like friends over the past 10 years. One of them recently lost her husband and just needed to talk about the adjustments she has gone through...one of them is waiting for reports back on a suspicious cyst that the doctor found.

Friday .... March 25th....  I actually went out and purchased a KU Jayhawk shirt and wore it to work today since KU was playing in the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA tourney!!! You have to understand that there is an intense rivalry between the KU Jayhawks and my KSU Wildcats!!! I am the only KSU fan in the pharmacy...so they were all in SHOCK when I walked into work in KU Blue and Crimson yesterday!! In fact two of them took pictures of me....for future proof!!! (And one of them posted her picture on Facebook...the stinker!!)

Saturday....March26th... I bought some ADORABLE baby leggings for Rhonin and had them shipped. I can't wait to see if Shawna likes them as much as I do!!

Sunday...March27th... BIG RAOK today...the clerk that was scheduled at work today didn't realize she was supposed to work and went out of town....I got a call right after church, asking me to come in and help. I scrapped my lunch plans, went home and changed clothes and went in and worked for 5 hours on my day off.

Monday...March28th... I struggled to come up with an RAOK today...so many times the "kind" things that I do are what I consider to be simply part of my job....so it is hard to see where my job ends and kindness begins. We had a handicapped customer come into the store today, looking for a couple of things and I spent quite a bit of time with her, trying to get the things that she was looking for. Is that an RAOK or is it just part of my job description???   I will let you be the judge

Tuesday.... March 29th....Helped a young man with the purchase of a prescription that he couldnt afford today...his wife had just had a c-section...he had enough money to buy the antibiotic that had been prescribed...but not the steroid...so I helped just a bit.

Wednesday...March 30th... I got to church a little early this evening and I spent the extra time getting the new "flower room" cleared out so that Deb ( the brains and talent  of the flower committee.) has plenty of spot to let those artist juices produce her beautiful floral displays for our sanctuary.

Thursday... March 31st.....and as my final entry into our little March of Kindness ( are you relieved???)...I made a call to one of the ladies at our church who is at home, recovering from a bad fall that she took, that earned her a trip to the ER.

And as March fades into history...I promise to continue Random Acts of Kindness as I try to brighten my little corner of the world

While I really like the idea of doing some random act of kindness every day, there's something about writing about it on your blog that seems to miss the spirit of it. Isn't the point that we perform this act of kindness without the expectation of anything in return? I feel like a bit of a kill-joy trotting out this quote: Matthew 6:1 "Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven."

@christao408 - That is very true...and I can tell you that I will not be reporting ALL of the little things that I do...I think the idea is to help other people get into the spirit too...just reading the list of things that Dionna has on her blog gave me some new ideas!!! I promise not to wave my flag too proudly

As a reply to christao408's comment, I think, if the 'kindness' is posted, it will give some of the others of us, ideas of what else we could also do.  And besides, the person it's done to, probably doesn't even read the entries on this website, and would never know.   Personally, I'd LIKE some more ideas.  I already have a few in mind.  I want to try this.  Sounds like fun to me.

Granny is right on as usual. I guess at this point the most I can hope for is to be good to Wil while he recovers from all this he has been dealing with. I hope to be able to get out more in March than I have in Jan and Feb so maybe I can cheer someone or help in some small way.

@Redlegsix - @GrannyHummingbird - Good points.  I felt kind of bad to mention the biblical quote but it crossed my mind and seemed like a reasonable question to ask.  In the end, if sharing one's actions can inspire others to do similar things, then the net effect is positive.

@christao408 ... I didn't respond very well to your original question...my brain was still in Texas...or something (That's my story and I'm stickin to it!!!). I guess what I SHOULD have said is that it isn't BIG things...for instance...if you look...my "Kindness" for today was pretty mundane...and required little effort on my part. I think the idea is to inspire kindness as a lifestyle in myself and hopefully in others.

@christao408 - I don't think you should feel bad at all, for quoting that scripture.  In many cases, I think that IS the reason folks do something nice, or donate boo koo $$$ somewhere......just to be recognized!!   You had a good point.   In THIS case, however, I think we can help each other by sharing our ideas.

You are a kind lady. I am glad you can write about your acts of kindness. As for me, if I do anything that is half way good or kind with my right hand, (metaphorically speaking), I would hate it if my left hand knows about it.

As moms and grandmas we do acts of kindness all the time. I had my kids over for supper last night. Day before that I babysat. Yesterday took my mom to the dentist. It's just life. Now, I could do some of those things more cheerfully.........
like taking mom to the dentist.

I actually came here today to point out that you do all this stuff, and much, much more, on a daily basis. I know I wake up to sweet emails, get lovely cards in the mail, receive thoughtful text messages throughout the day, no matter the month. You're pretty fantastic, Mom.

@ata_grandma - That is SO true!! Now I am praying that they actually get to go to the arbitration...it is in a town about 60 miles from here and we are getting SNOW...they are calling for up to 6 inches before it is all over!! They had to cancel it the last time because of the weather!!
